A shingle-style home on Cape Cod, MA glowing at dusk.

Whalewatch

Sitting uphill from the water on a private site, this property features a main house, connected pool house, and abundant outdoor living spaces. There is outlook to the ocean through a view corridor—an opening between the trees that reveals a spectacular view. The house is carefully oriented to take advantage of this opening. The overall composition responds to both the topography and the surrounding landscape.

On the first floor, full-height glass windows and doors create strong visual and physical connections to the outdoors. These openings bring in natural light and extend the living areas toward the terraces and pool. The result is a seamless relationship between the interior spaces and the coastal setting.

Down a winding country road, this house and its entry are designed to be seen from the road, but do not face it. The driveway crosses in front of the entry and leads to garage doors concealed to the public. The house is based on the classic Shingle Style, but is very horizontal, with a broad gable and big roof overhangs.

This coastal site had conservation restrictions that protect the trees, a coastal bank, and wetlands. Because of this, site development was limited and required careful planning to maximize its potential.

It was also desirable for the pool house to have a separate character from the main house, but regulatory requirements dictated that they be connected. To accomplish this, the two are joined by a breezeway.

Main living spaces and bedrooms are positioned to capture the water view and natural light throughout the day, reinforcing a strong connection to the landscape. Outdoor living is a focal point at the property.

A long rear porch, spacious screened porch, and outdoor kitchen support gathering and entertaining. Cascading terraces lead to a fire pit and infinity-edge pool, all set within a landscape defined by extensive stonework.
