Beyond the roots,
beyond land, is the sea
for which so many sailors pine.
And this house on high, perched in the mist—
uniting ocean, earth and sky in quite ritual.
Excerpt from GennaRose Nethercott’s Sestina for a Pinehills Home, commissioned by PSD in 2016.
PSD designed, built, landscaped and decorated the 2016 Boston Magazine Design Home in a new neighborhood called Dawn’s Light at The Pinehills in Plymouth, MA. The Design Home program pairs a design and construction team with a charity to provide a temporary fundraising venue in a home that is later sold. Funds raised from tours of the home and events that took place at it far exceeded any fundraising records set previously in the program and provided over $80,000 to Boston Children’s Hospital.
Situated at one of the highest elevations in the state that is within a short distance from the coast, the site has spectacular long distant views over the woodlands of Plymouth, Cape Cod Bay and Outer Cape Cod. The contemporary Shingle Style design incorporates symbolism appropriate to both a woodland setting, like the front porch columns and brackets that reach out like tree branches but also imply architectural arches, and a nautical setting, like the cable railings on the expansive view-facing deck. Pine cone shaped cut-outs in shutters at the front provide a delightful detail that further situates the home in its context.
