The annual PRISM Awards, hosted by the Builders and Remodelers Association of Greater Boston (BRAGB), honor the finest projects and outstanding achievements of professionals in the home design and building industries. Two PSD projects were recognized this year at the October hybrid gala. PSD's “Moon Shadow” project received a GOLD PRISM and PSD's “Harbor View Guest House” project received a SILVER PRISM. Both are recent renovation projects on Cape Cod. This marks fourteen total PRISM Awards for PSD.
Moon Shadow is a beloved seaside cottage that was originally built in 1920 and has been occupied by the same family for several generations. The wife of the current occupants grew up in the house in the summertime. Over the years, the house has been renovated several times but has retained its classic gambrel-roofed beach house character. The main focus of PSD’s recent renovation was to open up the living, dining, and entry hall spaces to one another and to the expansive ocean view. As a getaway for an active family, it was important to have a connection to the outside, to provide easy indoor/outdoor entertaining, and to facilitate socializing.
Harbor View Guest House is a property where sometime in the 1990’s the owners of a typical 1940’s era cape on Cape Cod expanded by moving an old barn to the site, adding it to one side, and repurposing it as living space. The barn was charming aesthetically but marginally functional as living space, so when our clients bought the property they asked us to renovate the cape and replace the barn. Our addition sits in the same location as the previous barn, and is designed to symbolically suggest “barn” when approached down the driveway. A new entry porch connects the board-and-batten clad “barn” to the side of the shingled old cape and provides shelter for a new entry door.
