Unusual among our clients, the owner of the Seapine Cottage is a single woman. At approximately 2000 square feet, the house is just big enough for her, an adult son and a guest. There are four main interior rooms: an open kitchen/living/dining room and three bedrooms. A large screened-in porch and a deck expand the living space and provide abundant opportunities for outdoor living.
This small house with big scale sits on a small site with a big view. The house sits high above a salt pond and is oriented to look straight through the opening from the pond to Pleasant Bay, over the outer beach, and to the ocean in the distance.
Details like the copper chimney cap and four-light windows with shutters are slightly exaggerated in their scale. This lends a slightly story-book character to the house. It is pleasing, charming, maybe even cute, but hopefully cutesy.
Interior finishes were carefully chosen by the client to be modest and affordable yet still reflective of the sweet and gentle sense of repose she sought for her special retreat. It is a retreat that both reflects her personality and feels at home at the water’s edge.
