Located on Chatham’s historic Main Street, a dilapidated retail shop building was razed by Polhemus Savery DaSilva Architects Builders and replaced with a new structure, replicating the original’s exterior, but with a dramatic new interior with a nautical flavor and extensive ship-like woodwork.
As realized through our new design, the front portion of the shop is a tall double-height space with a barrel vaulted ceiling. An office for the owner occupies a balcony that overlooks this small but grand room. Dormers were tucked into the rear portion of the roof so space that had previously been an attic could be turned into an office without altering the form of the building as viewed from the street.
